The Burwell-Morgan Mill

The Garden Club of Virginia Historic Restorations Project MILL LANDSCAPING PHOTOS

The Burwell-Morgan Mill was established in 1785 and is the oldest operable merchant mill in the Shenandoah Valley.  Listed on both the Virginia Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places, the mill is open to the public on most weekends from late spring through autumn.

Operated by volunteers, the mill grinds a variety of grains that are then available for purchase at the mill and at the local farmers’ market.  For a small entrance fee, visitors can get a tour of the historic structure, marvel at the unusual interior water wheel and wooden gears, and watch the dedicated millers grind wheat and corn just as it was done over 200 years ago.

Visitors may also enjoy the lovely meadow adjacent to the mill and bordered by Spout Run and the mill’s tail race.  Picnic tables are available for your enjoyment; public restrooms are available when the mill is open.  The meadow is also available for rental at reasonable rates for weddings, family reunions, company picnics, etc.

The Burwell-Morgan Mill is available to rent for private events.  For more information, click here.

Join us in The Campaign for the Mill!
We take our role as stewards of the Burwell-Morgan Mill very seriously, doing everything we can to ensure it's standing and operating for another 225 years. This year, with your help, we will raise $50,000 for some much-needed improvements, including:

* A new lighting system that will address electrical safety issues, be more efficient, and enhance the illumination of both the Mill and our semi-annual Art at the Mill shows.
* Stabilization of the plaster on the first floor of the Mill. The original plaster, complete with markings and recordings from centuries past, continues to deteriorate and fall away from the stone walls. We have identified a restoration expert in this area who can preserve what is left and keep it from further deteriorating.
* Repair of the windows. All of the 22 windows in the Mill need either reglazing, frame repair, pane replacement or all of the above. This is intricate - and costly - work.
*Various structural repairs, including gutter replacement and post and beam stabilization.
